2 Beha alotecha Statistics Mitzvot: 5 of the 613 Mitzvot, 3 positive & 2 prohibitions Verses: 136 (11th longest of the 54 Sidrot) Words: 1840 (12th longest) Letters: 7055 (12th longest) Haftarah: 21 verses (joint 31st shortest of the 80 Haftarot) Some Thoughts on the Sidra BY BARRY COLMAN Hashem spoke to Moshe, saying: Speak to Aharon and say to him: "When you light the lamps, the seven lamps shall cast their light toward the face of the menorah." (Bamidbar 8:1-2) This week s sedra opens with Hashem s command to Aharon to arrange and kindle the lights of the Menorah in the Mishkan. Hashem spoke to Moshe saying: Take the Levites from among the children of Israel and purify them. (Ibid. 8:5-6) Immediately following this the narrative switches to Hashem commanding Moshe to purify the Levi im and to assign them their tasks. In last week s sedra, Nasso, we see the inauguration of the Mishkan. There we learn about offerings brought by each tribe, what the leaders wore and which leader brought his offering on each of the days of the inauguration. Here, Moshe being commanded to purify the Levi im and assigning them their task is a continuation of the inauguration. But why in the middle of the description of the inauguration are we given the laws of lighting the Menorah? The mitzvah of lighting the Menorah was a daily task and not part of the one off inauguration. Seemingly this text is out of place. For when Aharon saw the dedication [offerings] of the chieftains, he felt distressed over not joining them in this dedication-neither he nor his tribe. So Hashem said to him, By your life, yours is greater than theirs, for you will light and prepare the lamps. - [Tanchuma Beha alothecha 3] (Rashi Bamidbar 8:2) Rashi, citing Chazal, explains the reason for this is due to Aharon being unhappy. Aharon was unhappy because a total of twelve Tribes participated in the inauguration. However, instead of the Tribe of Levi participating, the tribes of Ephraim and Menashe were counted individually. He had been left out. However, Hashem explains to Aharon that the task of the Menorah is so important it is included in the Chanukat HaMishkan - dedication of the Mishkan. Ramban (Nachmanides) is uncomfortable with Rashi s answer. He asks how can we call something that is to occur daily part of the inauguration? Citing a Midrash, Ramban explains that the day will come when the descendants of Aharon will reinaugurate the Temple following a barren period where no sacrifices will be brought. Instead of making the kindling of the Menorah part of the initial inauguration, Hashem is telling Aharon that the kindling of the lights represents a time in the future when the Tribe of Levi will bring a second inauguration. However on this occasion it will be for the Beit HaMikdash in Yerushalayim and not the Mishkan in the desert. An even greater task that only the tribe of Levi are worthy of doing. For this reason Aharon and the Tribe of Levi were excluded from the original inauguration as they were being saved for an even greater inauguration in the story of Chanukah. 3 Raising a Good Light Parashat Beha alotecha opens with the command to instruct Aharon in the lighting of the Menora. The language is not straightforward. ב ה ע לת ך 8:2) Beha alotecha et HaNerot (Bemidbar literally means in your raising up of the א ת ה נ ר ת lights. Why did it not simply use the verb Lehadlik (to kindle) which we use in our Brachot on להדליק Friday nights, Yom Tov and Chanukah? Our commentators offer a number of nuances in the chosen expression of raising up. The שתהא שלהבת Gemarra (Shabbat 21a) explains that when lighting the wicks, we should עולה מאליה not be satisfied with simply establishing a flame, it must burn sufficiently that the light is selfsupporting and rises up from itself. The Midrash states that Aharon should not rush from one kindling to the next. He must ensure that each flame is bright. When we light a candle, the initial flame is the burning of the wick. The goal, however, is the drawing through of the oil (or melted wax). It is the quality of this fuel which determines the brightness and consistency of the flame. When the fuel is being drawn through even the initially droopy wick stands tall. Rashi and Siftei Chachamim highlight this raising of the lamp and not merely the flame. Herein lies a beautiful metaphor for our Jewish education and our family lives. It is not enough to present the lessons to our children, nor to show them Judaism and let them make up their own minds / choose their own path. Jewish illumination is about ensuring a good measure of appropriate fuel and then tending the flame so that it shines through. Our goal is to raise up our children and our students so that they have the resource and encouragement to sustain themselves. Our aspiration is for disciples or successor generations who do not simply hold our light; they should shine independently bright. leave in their hands, they exposed to many different fuels which shape their development. It behoves us to stand close and attentive that we are drawing and encouraging the right fuel; to watch that they are channelling the right values and to raise them up so that they are independently self-sufficient and bright. In ensuring the right fuel, they must be steeped in a well of Torah learning and values, otherwise with a plethora of other resources, some good and some bad, Torah will not be the fuel which sustains them. My Rosh Yeshiva, R Poupko z l used to point out that Aharon s role, emphatically, does not stop there. He must guide the flames towards the centre. It is not every wick rising up for itself; there should be a sense of cohesion as we branch out from a central stem, yet burn together towards a collective light. We find ourselves in a world of many expressions of Torah Judaism (and how we address non-torah Judaism is a separate discussion). Our independent flames should nonetheless be guided towards a collective radiance, which is significantly centred, not polarised. The message is not what is good for me and mine is good for Am Yisrael; rather, what is best for Am Yisrael is right for me and mine. Our Parasha teaches that it is not enough to light a fire. Our responsibility is to secure, sustain and shape a communal flame. Shabbat Shalom Rabbi Jeremy Lawrence Whether it is the diet we put before our children, or their pocket money, or the mobile devices we

6 THIS WEEK S HAFTORAH BY RABBI ANDREWS Interestingly, this week s Haftorah from the second, third, and fourth chapters of Zechariah is the same as that for the first Shabbat of Hanukkah. The relation between the reading and the Torah portion could be the reference to the menorah ha zahav (golden candelabra) which parallels the special instructions to Aaron on how to care for it in this week s parsha. This would also explain the connection to Hanukkah. The first section of the Haftorah has Zachariah telling Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) to rejoice in her future redemption when Hashem will come and reside within her. The chapter closes with a call for all flesh to be silent before God and that that many nations will come to see Hashem as their deity as well. The dichotomy is interesting as the other nations will accept our version of the One True God. At the same time, the Jewish relationship with God will continue to be different and unique, as God will be residing in our midst. That mix of universalism and particularism characterises Judaism and our view of the future. The Midrash notes that the first passuk (verse), Rani v simchi (Sing and rejoice) connects Jerusalem s rejoicing to God s return to Jerusalem. This suggests that the redemption will not be complete when people return to Jerusalem, the Davidic kingship returns to Jerusalem, or even when the nations of the world come to accept our understanding of God. Jerusalem s full rejuvenation will only happen when God s Presence is once again ensconced in the city.
